Writing Program

A complete Writing program

A sound writing program is essential to a student’s academic growth and long-term success, beginning in the primary grades and developing steadily through each level of schooling. Writing is not a single skill learned in isolation; it is a complex process that involves organizing ideas, using appropriate vocabulary, applying correct grammar, and communicating clearly for different purposes and audiences. When these skills are introduced early and reinforced consistently, students gain the confidence and competence needed to express themselves effectively.

By following a structured and progressive writing program, students develop clarity, confidence, and precision in their communication. This steady growth allows them to meet increasing academic demands and become effective communicators prepared for success in school and beyond.

The Primary Grades 1-3

In the early years, students develop essential skills, such as sentence structure, basic punctuation, and clear expression of ideas. The primary focus is on developing basic literacy and mechanical skills. Students learn to form letters correctly, spell high-frequency words, and understand the difference between a letter, a word, and a sentence. The program introduces fundamental concepts such as capitalization, ending punctuation (periods, question marks), and the use of simple sensory details in narrative writing. They practice composing short, cohesive sentences and then linking them to create brief, focused stories or descriptive passages. It is at this time that students are introduced to the idea of editing their work.

The Junior Grades4-6

This division transitions students from simple sentences to structured, multi-paragraph composition. Key content includes mastering the structure of a paragraph (topic sentence, supporting details, concluding sentence) and learning how to draft three- and five-paragraph essays. Students practice various forms of writing, such as informative, narrative, and basic persuasive pieces. They receive explicit instruction on sentence variation, avoiding fragments and run-ons, and incorporating stronger vocabulary to improve clarity and style.

The Intermediate Grades 7-9

At the intermediate level, the program focuses on developing analytical and argumentative skills essential for middle school and early high school academics. Students learn to write formal, academic essays with clear thesis statements and evidence-based arguments, moving beyond personal narratives. Content includes summarizing and synthesizing information from sources, using formal transitions to ensure logical flow between paragraphs, and developing effective counterarguments. They practice their self-editing and peer editing skills to identify and eliminate sophisticated grammar errors.

The Senior Grades 10-12

When students enter their high school years. they prepare for the rigorous demands of post-secondary education and diploma examinations by focusing on advanced analysis, synthesis, and discipline-specific writing. The program content centers on literary analysis, rhetorical analysis, and researching and documenting long-form arguments. Students master advanced essay structures, integrate complex textual evidence using proper citation styles (e.g., MLA/APA), and refine their voice and tone for academic professionalism. The program ensures students can confidently write critical and persuasive essays under timed examination conditions.
