Tutor Masters Study program

What is involved in a strong study program?

A truly effective study skills program moves beyond simple “tips” and focuses on building a comprehensive system for learning. For students in grades 6-12, a high-quality program is usually built on four foundational pillars,

  1. The Executive Function Foundation

Before a student can study, they must be able to manage their brain’s “air traffic control.” A good program explicitly teaches:

  • Task Initiation: Strategies to overcome procrastination and “just start.”
  • Time Management: Moving from a simple “to-do list” to time-blocking and using a planner effectively.
  • Prioritization: Using tools to distinguish between what is urgent and what is truly important for long-term grades.
  1. Information Processing (Note-Taking & Reading)

Instead of passively highlighting a textbook, students are taught to engage with content.

  • Structured Note-Taking: Mastering methods which force students to summarize and create self-test questions while they write.
  • Active Reading: Techniques like the SQ3R method (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) to ensure they aren’t just “looking at words” but actually absorbing them.
  1. Science-Backed Retention Strategies

A good program replaces “cramming” with methods that respect how the human brain actually stores information.

  • Spaced Repetition: Reviewing material at increasing intervals (1 day, 3 days, 1 week later) to combat the forgetting curve.
  • Active Recall: Using flashcards or “blurting” (writing everything you remember on a blank page) to pull information out of the brain rather than trying to shove it in.
  1. Metacognition & Self-Regulation

This is “thinking about thinking.” Students learn to:

  • Self-Assess: Recognizing when they truly know a concept versus when it just looks “familiar.”
  • Test-Taking Strategy: Learning how to analyze different question types (multiple choice vs. essay) and manage exam anxiety through deep breathing and “brain dumping” at the start of a test.

Is Your Child Studying Harder—or Just Longer?

As parents, we often see our children spending hours at their desks, yet the results don’t always reflect the effort. Often, the missing link isn’t a lack of intelligence, but a lack of effective study systems. We invite you to take our Student Study Skills Audit. This brief assessment is designed to help you identify the specific “friction points” in your child’s academic routine. Whether it is a struggle with time management, passive note-taking, or exam-day anxiety, identifying the root cause is the first step toward academic confidence.
