Science 10

Science 10 - The Foundation Course

The Science 10 program is a foundational, integrated course taken by most high school students. It serves as a prerequisite for all of the specialized Science 20-level courses (Biology 20, Chemistry 20, and Physics 20). Its primary goal is to promote scientific literacy by exposing students to key concepts across the major scientific disciplines.

The curriculum is typically organized into four major units, providing a broad overview of each area:

  1. Energy and Matter in Chemical Change (Chemistry): Focuses on atomic structure, chemical nomenclature (naming compounds), types of chemical reactions, the Law of Conservation of Mass, and an introduction to the mole concept.
  2. Energy Flow in Technological Systems (Physics): Covers the basics of energy, work, power, motion (kinematics), and the concepts of thermodynamics and efficiency in mechanical systems.
  3. Cycling of Matter in Living Systems (Biology): Explores the basics of cell biology (organelles, function), cell-based technologies, and the life processes within living systems, often using plants as a primary example.
  4. Energy Flow in Global Systems (Climate/Earth Science): Examines the role of solar energy in global climate, mechanisms of energy transfer (radiation, convection), the characteristics of major biomes, and the impact of human activity on climate change.

The course emphasizes developing scientific skills (inquiry, problem-solving, data analysis) and understanding the relationships between Science, Technology and Society.
