Maintenance Program
Keeping Skills sharp
Have you noticed how quickly a child can lose a skill that you were sure they mastered? A student learns to add fractions one month, then a month later, he doesn’t remember what a fraction is. This can happen with any skill that a student learns if they don’t practice it. To keep this skill loss to a minimum, it is essential to have a maintenance program to prevent any significant regression.
Practicing mastered skills is so important for our students. They work very hard to learn something new! To avoid losing that progress, we must give them chances to practice the goals they have achieved.
By using the School House Canada Skill Maintenance Program, our students have the opportunity to practice what they’ve learned every week and, in turn, avoid the loss of mastered skills. Implementing this system has led to a significant reduction in skill regression.
The maintenance program is an easy way to make sure your children are getting the practice they need to maintain the skills they’ve learned.
How does the Skill Maintenance Program work?
Once the parents have decided to register their child, the Director of Education (or his designate) and the parents discuss the material covered at the child’s school and /or during our tutoring sessions to define the scope and duration of the maintenance program. Once this has been established, the students are sent activities and worksheets to maintain the skills they have already covered in school or during tutoring sessions. The maintenance program is not meant to introduce new instruction.
- The maintenance activities are sent out to parents every Monday in a pdf and need to be printed off for the student. This is know as Maintenance Monday.
- The practice sheets consist of 4 activities. One activity is to be completed each day and takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. The completed activities are to be returned daily to the assigned tutor for grading and feedback.
- If the student is completing his maintenance program with a high degree of accuracy, no intervention is required.
- If the student is demonstrating a deterioration of a previously learned skill, a brief reteaching via Zoom or Classrooms is scheduled.
- The student is provided additional instructional resources and help until the diminished skills and concepts are brought back up to a satisfactory level.
- The program costs $100.00 a month. Students sign up for increments of 3-month periods and may start any time during the school year.
