Chemistry 20

Chemistry 20: Building on the Foundation

Chemistry 20 focuses on the quantitative and conceptual fundamentals needed for all future chemistry. Many students struggle here because they must learn to integrate abstract concepts with complex math.

Unit Title

Core Concepts

Tutor Misters Focus

Diversity of Matter & Chemical Bonding

Intramolecular (Ionic, Covalent) and Intermolecular Forces (LDF, Dipole-Dipole, H-Bonding); VSEPR Theory and Molecular Shape.

Visualizing the Invisible: We use models and analogies to help students predict molecular geometry and polarity, which is key to understanding intermolecular forces and predicting physical properties like boiling points.

Forms of Matter: Gases

Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT); Gas Laws (Boyle’s, Charles’s, Combined, and Ideal Gas Law: PV=nRT).

Mastering Formula Manipulation: We focus on unit analysis to ensure the correct application of the Gas Laws, especially converting temperatures (Kelvin) and pressures, so students can confidently use the Ideal Gas Law.

Matter as Solutions, Acids & Bases

Concentration (C=n/V), Dilution (C1V1=C2V2), Qualitative Analysis; Introduction to Acids & Bases.

Calculation Confidence: We reinforce the essential mole concept and stoichiometry within the context of solutions, ensuring proficiency in preparing, diluting, and calculating the concentrations of standard solutions.

Quantitative Relationships (Stoichiometry)

The Mole Concept; Balancing Equations; Gravimetric Stoichiometry; Limiting/Excess Reagents; Percent Yield.

The Limiting Reactant Challenge: This is a major source of difficulty. We teach a structured, step-by-step method to identify the limiting reagent and calculate theoretical/percent yields accurately, tying back to the foundational concept of the mole.
