Biology 30: Molecular Biology, Evolution, and Population Dynamics

Biology 30 is often the most challenging, as it dives deep into molecular biology, genetics, and population-level changes, requiring a high level of abstraction and critical thinking—all crucial for the Diploma Exam.

Core Concepts

Tutor Masters Focus

Cell Division and Genetics

Chromosomal abnormalities; Advanced Mendelian Genetics (e.g., sex-linked traits, multiple alleles); Pedigree analysis; Hardy-Weinberg Principle.

Quantitative Genetics: We guide students through the systematic process of pedigree analysis. Crucially, we master the Hardy-Weinberg Principle, which is often a source of confusion, teaching them to apply these equations to population data.

Molecular Genetics

Gene Expression Transcription and Translation; Mutations and their effects; Gene Regulation; Modern Biotechnologies (PCR, Gel Electrophoresis).

The Central Dogma: We use flowcharts and practical models to solidify the Central Dogma, DNA, RNA, Protein, focusing on the roles of the different RNA types. We also clarify the principles behind biotechnology tools, linking the molecular concepts to real-world applications.

Evolution

Natural Selection and its mechanisms; Micro- and Macro-evolution; Speciation; Evidence for Evolution (fossil, biochemical).

Understanding Mechanism: We emphasize that evolution is a change in the frequency of alleles over time, helping students understand the causes (selective pressure) and mechanisms (genetic drift, gene flow) that drive changes in populations.

Population and Community Dynamics

Biotic and Abiotic Factors; Population Growth Models (Exponential and Logistic); Carrying Capacity; Relationships (Competition, Predation, Symbiosis).

Ecological Mathematics: We focus on interpreting population growth curves and understanding the concept of carrying capacity in the context of limiting factors. This unit integrates scientific concepts with real-world environmental issues.
